The Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) was recently announced by the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. The innovative program is injecting approximately $13.5 million into creating 1,200 job opportunities for Canadian youth within the farming and agri-food industry.
The YESP is more than just a funding opportunity; it's a commitment to nurturing the next generation of agricultural professionals. By covering up to 50% of wages, and even 80% for youth facing employment barriers, YESP is making agriculture an attractive and accessible career choice for young Canadians.
This initiative targets a wide range of applicants, including Indigenous youth, those with disabilities, racialized youth, recent newcomers, and many more, ensuring diversity and inclusion in Canada's agricultural workforce.
Employers in the agricultural sector are encouraged to apply between February 26, 2024, and March 25, 2024. With a special focus on Indigenous employers for the 2024-2025 program year, YESP aims to prioritize projects that contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural community.
Since its inception, the YESP has facilitated employment for approximately 5,100 youth across every province and territory, proving to be a cornerstone in the development of a skilled, diverse, and dynamic agricultural workforce.
This program is a key component of the broader Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), showcasing the Canadian government's dedication to helping young people transition successfully into the labour market.
As we look towards a future of sustainable and resilient farming, the YESP stands out as a beacon of hope and opportunity for young Canadians interested in agriculture. This is your chance to be part of Canada's thriving agricultural sector. Apply now and take the first step towards a rewarding career in farming.
