The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, has announced a substantial $177 million extension to the Wine Sector Support Program. The announcement was made at the Trius Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
"The economic impact of Canada's wine sector extends well beyond the vineyard, fostering job opportunities in agribusiness, food manufacturing, transportation, retail, tourism, and hospitality," said Dan Paszkowski, President and CEO of Wine Growers Canada. He emphasized the strategic nature of the Wine Sector Support Program, highlighting its role in driving sustainable rural economic growth and enhancing culinary tourism.
Acknowledging the sector's contribution to the economy and community, Chris Bittle, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, Ontario, expressed enthusiasm for the program's extension. "Today’s announcement is great news for Canada’s wine sector. By extending this program, we recognize the vital role wineries play in the economy and will continue to help them thrive for years."
Matthias Oppenlaender, CGCN-RCCV Treasurer, highlighted the significance of funding in providing valuable research and supporting the planting of healthier, more sustainable vineyards.
This funding reaffirms the government's dedication to the wine sector, ensuring it remains a key player in Canada's economic and agricultural growth. With these initiatives, the industry is set to thrive, adapting to climate challenges and continuing to delight consumers with high-quality Canadian wines.
