Initially pulling 60 per cent of their acreage away from the coop to go independent and establish themselves, Mandy and Brian Dewit of Riverside Cranberries, decided in 2019 when their cooperative contract was up for renewal, to not renew. The Dewit’s said they didn’t think twice about not signing.
“There was obviously a lot of risk pulling out and finding market sources. Our first year we exported everything to China, and now three years on we are in local speciality stores as well as larger chains like Sobeys. Knowing there is great local demand has made us invested to produce and capture that,” says Mandy.
