After four intense days of competition at the Orangeville Fairgrounds, the cream of the crop in plowing was celebrated at the Celebration of Excellence. Local plowman, Daryl Hostrawser, made headlines as the first-ever recipient of the Brian Fried Memorial Trophy, marking a significant milestone in the competition's history.
Scott Thomas from Elmwood and Terry Linton of Roseneath were named the Champion and Reserve Champion International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) Champion Horse Plow Person, with impressive scores of 493 and 468 points, respectively. Their achievements set the bar high, highlighting the fierce competition and the skill involved in this agricultural event.
The stakes were high, as winners earned the prestigious title of Ontario Plowing Champion and a chance to compete in next year's Canadian Plowing Championships in Wolfe Island, Kingston, Ontario. The representatives for Ontario include Junior Champions Austin Brodhaecker of Ayr and Alex Cameron of Owen Sound, along with others showcasing their skills in Tractor Plowing with both Conventional and Reversible Plows.
Daryl Hostrawser of East Garafraxa, who won in the reversible plow category with a notable 613 points, and Bob Campsall of Cannington, will be part of the six representatives donning special hats and coats for the competition, presented in memory of Graeme Craig, a long-time director with the Ontario Plowmen’s Association.
Various other awards were presented, recognizing the talents of Austin McLeod of Cottam, Richard Elliott of Strathroy, Gene Gruber of Richmond, and more. These awards celebrate the dedication and hard work of the participants, contributing to the spirit of the competition.
The Brian Fried Memorial Trophy was a new addition, honoring the late plowing champion who represented Canada at the World Plowing Championships ten times. The close-knit plowing community donated this award, and Fried's son, Nathan, presented it to Daryl Hostrawser, marking a heartfelt moment in the competition.
This celebration of excellence in plowing brings together a community, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared passion for agriculture. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the skill, dedication, and hard work that defines the farming community. Congratulations to all winners!
