Farm Management Canada, Farm Credit Canada, BDO and the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors are pleased to announce the second annual Farm Transition Appreciation Day (FTADay) today, January 11th, 2022.
“Farm transition – also known as succession planning – refers to the process by which the farm is transferred from one generation of owners to the next,” explains Heather Watson, Executive Director of Farm Management Canada.
“This includes ownership of assets, but also, transitioning its leadership and management.
The national Census of Agriculture has found only 8% of Canadian farmers have a written transition plan, despite estimates that over the next 10 years, 75% of farms across Canada will change hands.
FTADay is to acknowledge farm transition as a complex process, and to encourage and celebrate that process. Farmers, organizations, and agribusinesses across the country come together to share their farm transition success stories, tips, resources, and tools through a national social media campaign and learning events across Canada.
“Now more than ever we need to focus on our wins and share best practices on how to do succession well,” states Maggie Van Camp, the National Agricultural Practice Development Leader for BDO.
“More importantly, we need to celebrate our generational farm families, who are the resilient and strong cornerstone of this country.”
