Canada’s agri-food producers, seafood farmers, and ranchers gathered for the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Nearly a total of 300 commitments from hundreds of thousands of people from around the world and all constituencies stood together to accelerate action and transform food systems to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
For the past 18 months, the Summit brought together all UN Member States and constituencies around the world to bring about tangible, positive changes to the world’s food system.
“After 18 long months, the world is on the brink of a Summit that aims to change the trajectory of global progress, uniting everyone in a shared commitment to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals and the fundamental human rights at their core,” said Agnes Kalibata, UN Special Envoy for the UN Food Systems Summit.
In addition to national strategies, the Summit plans to launch joint initiatives and coalitions. This includes pledges to ensure healthy and nutritious meals for all schoolchildren, reduce food waste and unlock agricultural innovation to deliver on climate goals.
The UN Food Systems Summit provides a platform to look forward and commit to an inclusive, multi-stakeholder and system approach for the future of food. It is recognized that everyone, everywhere must act and work together to transform the way the world produces, consumers and thinks about food.
