Simon Plante and his partner Alison Blouin of Polyculture Plante, have been named Quebec’s 2024 Outstanding Young Farmers.
The accolade was announced at a vibrant event held at La Grange de l'île on Île d'Orléans, signaling a bright future for innovative farming in the region.
Simon, a dedicated horticultural producer, has been involved with his family’s farm in Sainte-Pétronille since 2009, becoming the sole shareholder and bringing the farm to new heights.
His efforts, along with those of his partner Alison, who joined the farm after a decade of experience on other farms, have seen Polyculture Plante flourish into a diverse and productive agricultural enterprise.
The farm spans 327 acres, with a focus on varied crops like summer and fall strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, sweet corn, tomatoes, onions, and squash, not to mention a thriving maple grove.
Their collective approach has successfully scaled the farm to support multiple families and has enhanced their community's access to fresh, local produce.
Simon and Alison’s achievements are set against the backdrop of Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers' program, which annually celebrates the country's agricultural leaders aged 18 to 39.
This program highlights the importance of innovation and excellence in farming, supported by notable sponsors such as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, CIBC, and John Deere among others.
As they prepare to represent Quebec at the national finals in Lethbridge, Alberta, the farming community watches with anticipation.
Their commitment to sustainable and efficient farming practices not only sets a benchmark for other young agriculturists but also underscores the vital role of agriculture in Canada’s economy and cultural heritage.
This accolade is inspiration for the next generation of farmers, showcasing the impact of dedication and innovative farming techniques in building a sustainable future.
