We welcomed a new seed grower to the 2023 Small Farm Canada Seed Guide called No Coast Seeds (NCS). They are in Saskatchewan and are passionate about growing seed on the Prairies.
“We grow open pollinated seeds for short season gardens, breeding groups, diverse gene pool mixes, experimental populations, new open pollinated cultivars, favourite heirlooms and family collections.”
When we think about the origin of seed, not often do we think of where they are going next. NCS reminded me of the future when looking at their product offering that aims to expand regional diversity in their experiments and breeding programs.
NCS are also partnering with the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI). OSSI is dedicated to maintaining fair and open access to plant genetic resources worldwide to ensure the availability of germplasm to farmers, gardeners, breeders, and communities of this and future generations.
