If you are or want to become a certified organic farmer, it’s essential that you understand the certification standards. Even if you just want to learn more about organic farming methods or better understand what goes into the organic food you buy, you might want to read the standards.
But, let’s face it, the standards can be complicated and a challenge to understand.
Canadian Organic Growers (COG) has addressed the need for clarification by producing the free online Guide to the Canadian Organic Standards. Clause by clause, the guide explains the rationale behind the standards and permitted substances lists. Examples of allowable products and practices are provided, along with details describing what the standard means and why. Readers are encouraged to refer to the Canadian Organic Standards while going through the guide.
Our hope is that COG’s Guide to the Canadian Organic Standards will help demystify the standards for farmers and consumers. Check it out at www.cog.ca/home/resources/standard-guide/
