The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is advocating for stronger measures to combat rural crime as a key issue for the upcoming provincial election.
According to Statistics Canada’s 2021 report, Saskatchewan has the highest crime severity index for rural areas, highlighting the need for additional supports in rural communities.
Rural Saskatchewan faces several challenges in addressing crime, including its vast geographical spread, limited resources, and longer emergency response times.
As Bill Huber, Acting President of SARM, explains, “Rural Saskatchewan continues to grapple with a wide range of issues, from property crimes to traffic enforcement, all while balancing the needs of its diverse communities.”
Farmers are particularly vulnerable, experiencing thefts of fuel, machinery, and parts, leading to financial losses and increased insurance premiums.
Due to the large areas RCMP officers must cover, response times can be delayed, leaving rural properties exposed to repeat offenses. Despite police efforts, penalties for crimes like theft and vandalism often remain minimal, failing to deter offenders.
SARM is pushing for a stronger police presence, tougher penalties, and better collaboration between officers and communities.
" As we anticipate more officers being added to rural areas, SARM continues to push the provincial government for sustained support in increasing police staffing, imposing tougher penalties, and developing new initiatives to enhance collaboration between officers and communities. We also call for increased efforts to address the root causes of crime, such as issues stemming from mental health and addictions,” adds Huber.
This growing concern calls for urgent action from the provincial government to ensure rural Saskatchewan communities are better protected and supported.
