Before free trade we grew more romaine in Canada. After free-trade it made sense for growers to switch away to other crops as they couldn’t compete with growers south of the border. Now many of the places that we depend on for lettuce are experiencing challenges due to climate change and lack of water.
Seven-dollar lettuce is a new reality that many Canadian consumers are not prepared to face. But face it we will due to excessive heat, forest fires and drought in winter supply chains like California.
