In the May-June 2023 issue of Small Farm Canada magazine, Matt Jones investigates mixture planting, also known as combination or maslin planting. Maslin planting is when multiple types of grains are mixed and sown. In recent years, researchers from Cornell University have been studying the technique which dates back 3,000 years and is still utilized in countries such as Ethiopia and Sudan.
Their research shows that the technique could have significant benefits in the context of climate change. A totally different approach to today’s monoculture grain production, processing beyond the farmgate presents a challenge.
