How To Love A Forest
The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World
“Ethan Tapper’s stunning literary debut is a tender and fearless reimagining of what it means to care for forests, ecosystems and each other.”
As part of Forest Appreciation Week, the Ontario Woodlot Association presented a book reading of How To Love A Forest from Ethan Tapper, Forester and Author from Bear Island, Vermont.
One of Ethan Tapper’s goals is to change the way we talk about forests. Due to private ownership of forests, he also believes that there is a real opportunity to build a coalition to meet challenges and bring more people into the discussion to increase the volume of understanding.
Tapper is investigating and relating – what an evolved forest ecosystem relationship can look like today. Just looking and observing is not enough.
In his experience, herbicide use is a hard decision, and it is about what is possible to create in the forest rather than destroy.
In How To Love A Forest, Tapper is also relating gems from his education and experience with restorative and ecological silviculture. Practices such as encouraging multi-generational forests and deadwood on the forest floor while also considering all the tools at a forester’s disposal. That tool may at times include herbicides if the long-term sustainability is in question.
Tapper’s passion for forestry and ecology is heart-felt and entwined with a mission and tactics to restore an old friend the forest.
