Did you know that Canada is recognized worldwide for producing high-quality malting barley? Canada is the fifth largest barley producer and the third largest malt barley exporter in the world.
To remain competitive in the global marketplace, the industry continues to build on this reputation, expand its customer base and promote new varieties that meet the needs of customers.
The Government of Canada invests over $960,000 for the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) to expand existing and develop new markets for Canadian barley and barley products.
"Canada's barley producers have faced many recent challenges, including a historic drought and the pandemic,” says The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
“Despite adversity, the industry continues to look for opportunities in domestic and global markets. This investment will help the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) promote malting barley, which will strengthen its competitiveness and contribute to national economic growth."
Through the AgriMarketing Program, CMBTC will undertake marketing and promotional initiatives in major export markets and prospective countries.
This funding will provide technical services to optimize the quality and performance of Canadian barley, as well as education and training to help customers gain an understanding of the unique qualities and special processing attributes of new malting barley varieties.
CMBTC is offering an in person malting course on March 16-17th at the Sheraton Hotel in Saskatoon. The course will provide an overview of the Canadian malting barley value chain, theoretical and practical knowledge of malting technology and processing, as well as a review of global barley, malt, and brewing statistics.
Attendees will gain an understanding of malting barley selection criteria, quality evaluation, specialty malts and attend presentations on barley breeding and growing malt barley.
The course is free for registered barley producers. For event details, visit here. For more information, contact cole@saskbarley.com
