Every year, beginning the first Monday of June, Ontario bursts into celebrations for Local Food Week, honoring the hard work and dedication of local farmers and the entire agricultural sector.
This week-long event, from June 3 to June 9, 2024, showcases the significant contributions of those involved in food production and supply, from farm to table.
Lisa Thompson, Ontario's Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, emphasizes the importance of the agricultural community. She says, "Our farmers can produce over 200 different types of commodities, which is worth celebrating." The province takes this opportunity to acknowledge the effort that strengthens both its economy and rural communities.
A highlight of the week is the Local Food Report, which features stories of innovation and educational endeavors within the agricultural sector.
For instance, it includes a pioneering business that ensures the year-round availability of fresh strawberries, and an urban farming class that helps students learn about agriculture.
The Fresh from the Farm program, run by the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association, is in the spotlight. It involves students in fundraising activities by selling locally grown fruits and vegetables, thus fostering a connection between young people and their food sources.
Ontarians are encouraged to support their local farmers and businesses by choosing products marked with the Foodland Ontario logo or, even better, by buying directly from farmers at markets or on their farms.
Through Local Food Week, Ontario not only highlights the substantial economic impact of agriculture, which contributes $48.8 billion to the provincial GDP, but also promotes the growth of local food consumption and production.
