Canadian report, Cellular Agriculture - Canada’s $12.5 Billion Opportunity in Food Innovation is the first-of-its-kind to launch.
Cellular agriculture involves several innovative approaches that use cell cultures, tissue engineering, or precision fermentation to make food products and other materials. It is underpinned by the platform technology of engineering (synthetic) biology to create a variety of products in new and sustainable ways.
This report is based on extensive stakeholder engagement and builds on the White Paper Engineering Biology - a platform technology to field multi-sector economic recovery and modernize biomanufacturing in Canada.
It illustrates that the Canadian cellular agriculture landscape is rapidly evolving and shows tremendous promise to develop alongside and augment Canada’s conventional agriculture and food industries.
Optimistic scenarios suggest Canadian revenues as high as $12.5 billion per year, with the creation of up to 142,000 jobs.
This rapidly expanding and high-potential global market is expected to approach US$100 billion in the next decade, and the report identifies three interconnected actionable opportunities for Canada to capitalize on, to achieve success.
Canada must:
- Develop a National Vision and Strategy for a Canadian Cellular Agriculture Industry in the Near Term inclusive of stakeholder requirements and include a plan for implementation in the short-, medium- and long-term
- Establish a Clear and Transparent Regulatory Framework for Cellular Agriculture Products in Canada that aligns with Canada’s current regulatory process and food safety standards
- Provide Supporting Mechanisms for Research and Commercial Development that prioritizes the incentivize domestic research, innovation, training, and company creation
Canada has the opportunity to diversify and grow its food and agriculture sector and become a leader in the new global landscape. By acting on the priorities outlined in this report, Canada can meet sustainability and food security goals, and benefit from new global economic markets.
