National Farmers Union (NFU) releases the Second Edition of a report on Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Canada.
This complete and detailed report is now updated to include 2020 emissions values and revised Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) methodologies.
NFU first completed the First Edition of the report in March 2022.
In April 2022, ECCC released its annual National Inventory Report (NIR) which included data on GHG emissions and fluxes for 2020.
Most critically, the NIR 2022 included very significant changes in the methodologies for calculating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from synthetic fertilizer and manure.
It also unveiled changes in the methodologies for calculating carbon/CO2 fluxes between the atmosphere and soils—also known as “sequestration”.
ECCC says that “This year’s [NIR] submission includes significant recalculations in reported estimates for Forest Land, Cropland and Harvested Wood Products categories. The most notable recalculations were due to updated methods to estimate changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) impacted by crop productivity changes and manure application....”
