Manitoba Conservation and Climate is looking for new ways to work with the province’s farmers to reduce their plastic waste and repurpose what they can. The key items they are looking to account for on farms are hay bale binders, silage film, grain bags and baler twine.
To create this program the MCC is working with CleanFARMS on the program which they have titled the Manitoba Ag Plastic Plan.
The plastic plan will add a small price increase on the purchase of plastic items on farms to fund the removal and recycling of the items from farms. This will allow for provincial recycling organizations to pick up all the recycling that was previously unable to be removed from farms across Manitoba.
The price increases are going to be based on the number of kilograms purchased, starting at 25 cents per kilogram of grain bags and 33 cents of baler twine. The small price increases are expected to fully fund the program and allow recycling to be picked up from farms across the province.
