The Sollio Next Generation Award Gala, held for the 2023-2024 period, spotlighted the importance of innovation by honoring the MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company for its unique approach to integrating brewing and farming, showcasing versatility and creativity within the agricultural community.
Based in Bath, Ontario, the MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Co. has carved a niche for itself by combining traditional farming with the craft of brewing. As their website explains "As the eighth generation to inherit the family business, we decided to add another element to the mix: a farm-based brewery. In doing so, we’ve renovated century-old barns to house our equipment, and planted hops and malting barley in the surrounding fields. Our mission is for the character and history of our home to shine through in every glass."
The company's founders, Anna, Ivan, Evelyn, Henry, and Nicole MacKinnon were celebrated for their innovative business model that not only supports local agriculture but also adds value to their community and the broader agricultural sector.
As one example of their different approach, they will be hosting a Total Eclipse of the Farm party on April 8, 2024. (View related article “Eclipse 2024 will show a spectacular sky show over Canada”.)
