They say love doesn’t cost a thing, but often, Valentine’s Day is a different story.
With inflation rates still high, it is no surprise that prices of classic Valentine’s Day gifts are up this year. The average price of a dozen roses rose 22% from last year, while assorted chocolates are 9% higher and overall candy sales are at its peak. Imported champagne, which are already more expansive than other sparkling wines, rose to roughly 18% from a year before, costing $53 a bottle.
With Valentine’s Day being the day of love, it is a given for people to express their affection and appreciation to their loved ones with greetings and gifts.
If you are last minute shopping and preparing for this lovely holiday, here are a few things to consider:
Ditch the roses
Roses are not the only flower! Romantics looking for a beautiful bouquet to impress their loved ones are encouraged to get creative this year. Click here to see 6 flower alternatives to roses.
When purchasing flowers, be sure to get ones that are fresh; all flower stems should be upright and firm while leaves should be flexible and soft to touch. Also consider purchasing flowers buds that have not fully matured yet to extend the life of the arrangement. Fresh-cut flowers keep longer and stay much fresher when stored in a cooler.
Consider plants
Think about giving a potted plant as an alternative to cut flowers – they will last a lot longer. The best plants to give is one that will thrive in the environment. Click here to see potential valentine plants.
Shop smart, shop local
Support local businesses. Often times, smaller businesses offer unique products and local makers bring their personal experience, skills and creativity to their products. They always want the best result, not your money.
Make it personal, make it your own
You don’t have to always give monetary gifts. It is just as important and even more memorable to tailor a gift that will excite the recipient specifically. If words of affirmation is their love language, pour your heart onto a page or write a poem. Or you may plan an experience such as cooking a homemade meal or going out of town to spend quality time together.
Remember there is no such thing as the perfect gift. Valentine’s Day does not have to be elaborate or all-day affairs. Valentine’s Day is simply about expressing your love to those you cherish most.
Happy Valentine's Day!
