In an important move for Newfoundland and Labrador's agriculture sector, over $7 million has been invested as part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This funding is pivotal in supporting over 110 projects since April 2023, focusing on enhancing the mental health and safety of those in the farming sector.
"The environmental and economic challenges our farmers face can significantly impact their mental health," says The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. "This investment is crucial for improving the well-being of those working in the agriculture sector across Newfoundland and Labrador, ensuring they have the support they need."
A notable portion of this funding, more than $928,000, aids the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture in executing a range of projects. This includes a newly launched initiative targeting farm-focused mental health and safety.
"The safety and well-being of farmers, amidst challenges like natural perils and climate change, is our utmost priority," states The Honourable Elvis Loveless, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture. He appreciates the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture for leading efforts in education, public awareness, and professional development in the province's agriculture sector.
Wayne Simmons, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture (NLFA), highlights the organization's commitment. "Our farmers' well-being is a high priority for the NLFA. With Sustainable CAP funding, we are advancing several projects, including this new initiative focused on farmers' mental health, wellness, and safety. We're working towards a better future for our farmers and the agriculture sector in Newfoundland and Labrador."
This investment is part of the broader Sustainable CAP, a 5-year, $3.5 billion agreement aimed at strengthening the competitiveness, innovation, and resilience of the agriculture sector.
Newfoundland and Labrador's farmers and producers are set to benefit from over $42 million in cost-shared Sustainable CAP funding, enhancing various initiatives, including Agriculture in the Classroom, Agriculture Expos, and a conference supporting Women in Agriculture.
