Phragmites, also knows as common reed, is a perennial grass that can grow up to five metres tall. It is native to Europe and Asia and has invaded wetlands in Eastern North America. It outcompetes native wetland species, threatening biodiversity. It provides poor habitat and is also a poor substitute for native species when it comes to the environmental services that wetlands provide in maintaining water quality.
Once introduced into an area, its rhizomes lay down a network and spread far and wide. Its seeds are easily dispersed by wind.
Roots grow very deep and with extensive rhizomes require a few steps and substantial time to eradicate. Depending on the ecosystem, a combination of mowing, litter burning (to kill seed) and tarping may be employed.
