The Poultry Industry Council and the Feather Board Command Centre in Ontario announced:
On December 16, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of H5 avian influenza on an Ontario premise in the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc. The infected premise is the first in Ontario this season and has been placed under quarantine. CFIA has also established specific movement control measures and permitting processes for farms within a 10km Zone around the premise.
On December 19, CFIA also confirmed the presence of H5 avian influenza in Oxford Country, now the second premise to be infected this season.
Currently there are 86 active HPAI cases in Canadian provinces, affecting approximately 14 million birds, mainly affecting Western Canada. The Maritime provinces have no confirmed cases at present and Quebec’s, four incidences of avian influenza are low pathogenic. Details on additional premises in other provinces can be found on the government of Canada website.
Farmers are encouraged to follow heightened biosecurity measures. Farmers are also reminded that they should have appropriate biosecurity personal protective equipment (PPE) available for themselves, their family and anyone entering their premise.
Reminder, if your birds show any signs of illness, call your veterinarian immediately.
