As part of our ongoing support of our LGBTQ+ teammates, small farmers and communities we serve, Small Farm Canada recognizes June as Pride month.
Every June, everyone is encouraged to embrace who they are and let the world know – in style.
It is a tribute to those who were involved in the Stonewall Riots in Manhattan in the United States in 1969. In Canada it honours those who lived through the Toronto bathhouse raids in 1981 and commemorates the LGBTQ+ community.
Whether it’s parades, festivals and concerts going on across the world, join in the fun and get involved to learn the important social history of pride month.
At Small Farm Canada, we cultivate a culture of inclusion that encourages everyone to show their full and authentic selves each day.
Here’s how to celebrate pride month:
- Wave your flag! Grab a rainbow, bisexual, lesbian, pansexual, asexual, or any other flag of your preference to wave around with pride
- Wear your colours! Don’t have a flag? Rep one and/or all the rainbow flag’s original eight colours that has meaning: pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for peace, and purple for spirit
- Join a pride parade! Run, walk, skip, or dance in a pride parade. You don’t need to identify as LGBTQ+ to attend a pride march, everyone is welcome to show their support for gay rights and equality for all
- Learn more! It isn’t just about festivals, rainbows and glitter, watch a movie, documentary or listen to a podcast to give you more information about the serious message behind Pride Month
In honour of Pride Month, every Wednesday, Small Farm Canada will be highlighting a Canadian farm, collective and/or organization that are working to strengthen LGBTQ+ representation in the food system and give back to their communities.
This week, we’re featuring Rainbow Chard Collective, Canada. See more here.
