The first agricultural fairs in Canada were in Nova Scotia. Starting in the 1700s, they spread to Upper Canada and then west. Agricultural fairs, commonly known as fall fairs or exhibitions are held around harvest time. Many to this day involve community building, agricultural competitions and leadership events.
Today fall fairs, exhibitions and festivals build connections between urban and rural communities. Connections built from farm to city though displays, competition, extension and fun.
The Manitoba Fibre Festival is a unique annual gathering connecting local fibre farmers with the crafting community in a relaxed creative atmosphere. Events at the September 8th and 9th festival include crafting techniques, tool demonstrations, finger weaving, machine knitting and sheep shearing.
A family friendly event, this Festival offers demonstrations of many crafts from ancient lace-making techniques to machine knitting and sheep shearing, a curated fibre art show, workshops, and a wonderful market.
