Alberta celebrated new farming talent at this year’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ regional event, held with Olds College.
The Doerksen brothers, Daniel, Lorin, and Barry, fourth-generation farmers from Gem, Alberta, were named Alberta’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2024, shining a spotlight on their sustainable and innovative farming practices.
Operating under the family name, the Doerksens manage a diversified farm featuring both crop production and cattle ranching.
They have successfully integrated their extensive knowledge of agriculture with modern sustainable practices to enhance their farm's productivity and ecological footprint.
Their operations include a mix of irrigated cash crops and forage, crucial for their winter feed and silage supplies.
The family's dedication extends to their cattle operations, where they raise purebred Hereford and Red Angus cattle.
Focused on traits like fertility and longevity, they have also ventured into direct marketing with their brand, Gemstone Grass Fed Beef.
This initiative allows them to sell high-quality, grass-finished beef directly to consumers, available both online and at local farmers' markets in Calgary.
Their approach not only supports local food systems but also promotes regenerative farming practices that help maintain soil health and reduce environmental impact.
This commitment to quality and sustainability was highlighted during the event, which also drew attention from industry leaders and government representatives, including Alberta Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson.
As the Doerksen brothers prepare for the national competition later this year in Lethbridge, their story serves as an inspiring example of how traditional farming techniques can be enhanced by innovative, sustainable approaches to meet modern demands.
Their achievements not only underscore their commitment to the agricultural industry but also to the communities they serve, promising a robust future for Canadian agriculture.
