In a recent celebration in Antigonish, NS, Geena Luckett was named the Atlantic’s Outstanding Young Farmers (OYF) recipient for 2024.
This prestigious award, given to exceptional young farmers across Canada, highlights those who make significant contributions to their fields, combining innovation with traditional farming practices.
Geena's journey into agriculture began uniquely. Transitioning from a city environment to a farm at eleven, her interest in agriculture was sparked by her family's venture into fruit and vegetable production for their specialty grocery stores.
After earning a Bachelor of Management from Dalhousie University, Geena returned to manage the family vineyard in 2012.
Her leadership at Luckett Vineyards, which are on 130 acres, is notable for its diverse wine production that includes varieties like L’Acadie, Osceola Muscat, and Riesling, among others.
Geena has been instrumental in steering the vineyard to become a leader in wine tourism, emphasizing quality, customer service, and sustainable practices.
The event highlighted not only Geena's achievements but also the contributions of past OYF alumni and the supportive community in the agriculture sector.
The celebration at Steinhart distillery was well-attended by industry peers, demonstrating the tight-knit nature of agricultural communities in Canada.
Danny Penner, President of the National OYF board, expressed immense pleasure in witnessing the high standards and hospitality of the event.
He remarked on the significance of adding Geena to the illustrious list of national honourees, underscoring her role in advancing Canadian agriculture.
As Geena prepares to represent the Atlantic region at the National OYF event in Lethbridge later this year, her story serves as an inspiration.
It showcases the dynamic nature of modern farming where tradition meets innovation, and it stresses the vital role young farmers play in sustaining and advancing agricultural practices in Canada.
