University of Guelph is excited to introduce its Bachelor of One Health (BOH) degree program, set to launch in fall 2022.
This is the first four-year undergraduate degree devoted to One Health in Canada, connecting agriculture, environment and biodiversity science, animal biology and veterinary medicine, health and life science, social science, environmental governance, culture and community engagement.
One Health focuses on the ecology and epidemiology of complex health problems and diseases between animal, human and ecological systems.
Students will explore socio-cultural and scientific perspectives, connections, and interactions among human, animal and environment health.
Areas of focus within the One Health program include:
- Diversity, Complexity and Health
- Environment, Food and Health
- Policy, Economics and Health
- Culture, Society and Health
One Health is led by the College of Biological Science and the Department of Integrative Biology. This is in collaboration with the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the Ontario Agricultural College and the Ontario Veterinary College.
“The necessity for this (One Health) has been highlighted so well during the current pandemic, where focusing on the impacts on human health is only a small part of solving the puzzle,” explains Dr. Brian Husband, Associate Dean, academic in the College of Biological Science and Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology.
“Rather, it requires an understanding of the origins of the virus, the evolution of virulence, environmental influences on virus transmission, social influences and inequities, as well as diagnosis and treatment.”
