Saskatoon, SK – Young Agrarians (YA) is hosting a two-day educational Mixer on Treaty Six Territory at Beaver Creek Camp in Dundurn (SK) December 2-3, 2023. In the spirit of YA Mixers, this event will provide a space for participants to network and build community from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The Mixer is open to a diverse audience, including individuals who are currently farming on a small or large scale, aspiring farmers, and farmer allies. Focused on the theme ‘Rooted: Grow Deep,’ the Mixer will highlight the importance of the world’s biggest terrestrial carbon sink- the prairie grasslands. The Mixer will be a great networking opportunity for anyone interested in farming and grassland conservation.
Why? Young Agrarians is on a mission to grow the next generation of farmers in Canada. Canada’s farming population is shrinking, reaching a historic low in 2021. According to Statistics Canada, only 1.3% of the population is farming, and the average age of farmers is 56 nationally. Currently, there are only 22,635 farmers 35 and younger in the country. Succession in agriculture is a major issue of national importance that will require a dynamic set of supports to ensure that there are future farmers and farm renewal.
Young Agrarians was established in B.C. in 2012, with programs launching in Alberta in 2015, and expanding into Saskatchewan and Manitoba in 2021. With over a decade of experience working to enable a new generation to get on the land and grow, Mixers have always been at the heart of YA’s work. Mixers enable new generations to connect and build relationships that create the community foundation essential for new and aspiring farmers to start and sustain their farms.
The Prairies Mixer has a vibrant and inspiring agenda, with many opportunities to network. There will be open discussions and formal presentations covering various topics including: Treaty Relationships, Indigenous Fire Stewardship, prairie restoration efforts, soil health, farm marketing, Canadian Fibershed and more. Presentations will be led by community leaders and experts in their respective fields, ensuring that participants receive valuable insights and knowledge on various aspects of farming and land stewardship. This mixer will be the first of its kind in the three prairie provinces.
