In the January-February 2023 issue of Small Farm Canada Matt Jones tells the story of two farmers relocating their farm and livestock from Yukon to New Brunswick. But also the reason why fencing is so important.
In Yukon especially fencing is one strategy used to ensures that disease does not spread from livestock to wildlife.
There are special requirements to own sheep and goats in the Yukon. These requirements are in place to:
- help Yukon farmers be stewards for the environment
- protect Yukon’s wild thinhorn sheep and mountain goat populations
- support farmers with their livestock production
Owners of sheep and goats must comply with the sheep and goat Control Order to reduce the risk of spreading respiratory pathogens, especially Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M. ovi), to wild sheep and goats.
