Canada's beloved farmers' markets are more than just a hub for fresh produce; they're now at the forefront of a vital initiative aimed at combating food insecurity.
The national association of Canadian Farmers' Markets, is calling upon the federal government to back a nationwide coupon program. This program's primary aim? To ensure everyone, especially those most vulnerable, has access to fresh, local food.
In Alberta, where a staggering 21.8% of the population, including one in five children, struggles with food insecurity, the call for support is more urgent than ever.
Christie Fleck, the executive director of the Alberta Farmers' Market Association, is championing the cause, emphasizing its significance. "It’s a crucial step to ensure those facing food challenges receive fresh produce they might otherwise miss," Fleck stated.
These aren't just words. The farmers' market in Brooks, Alberta, provides a shining example. With a one-time grant of $25,000, they launched a trial coupon program.
The results?
Not only did it support local vendors, but it also provided for 100 individuals.
