March is proclaimed Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM). Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau announced $415,000 in support for Agriculture in the Classroom Canada.
Agriculture In the Classroom Canada aims to connect students across the province with farmers and other agricultural professionals to learn Canada’s agriculture and food story.
This year’s theme is “Connections in Agriculture” which will help students see how we are all connected to agriculture. Students will discover the countless people, from farm to table, that work in the world of agriculture to produce our food.
Industry volunteers, including farmers, ranchers, and professionals, will join classrooms to share presentations and personal experiences to help students realize how they are also connected to agriculture.
In addition to Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month, Agriculture in the Classroom Canada is hosting The Great Canadian Farm tour - different farm tours focusing on the diversity of commodities across Canada.
Each province will host a live, virtual farm tour. Upcoming tours include:
March 8 @ 9:30AM PST – Egg farm in British Columbia
March 11 @ 9:30AM AST – Mixed Operation farm in Nova Scotia
March 15 @ 11:00AM CDT – Seeds farm in Manitoba
March 16 @ 9:30AM MST – Sugar Beets farm in Alberta
March 17 @ 9:30AM CST – Beef farm in Saskatchewan
March 22 @ 9:30AM AST – Egg Farm in New Brunswick
March 24 @ 9:30AM AST – Pork farm in Prince Edward Island
March 30 @ 9:30AM EST – Aquaculture farm in Ontario
More students are registered now more than ever to participate in hand-on activities, read a book related to agriculture and welcome a volunteer into their class.
"Agriculture Literacy Month provides students with an important opportunity to learn about agriculture's significant contribution to each province," says Dustin Duncan, Education Minister of Saskatchewan.
"Agriculture plays a critical role in keeping our communities fed, maintaining a strong economy and providing future employment opportunities for students in a wide-range of areas."
