Woodlot owners (between 30 and 40 hectares of land) provide a host of economic and environmental benefits to Canadians. While this group collectively owns only 6 % of the land (19 million hectares), they produce more than 10% of all forest products in Canada.
These woodlot owners (90 per cent) are in Canada’s most densely populated region, Southern Ontario. Their existence in relation to cityscapes of that region, creates some balance with industrial complexes and hard surfaces.
Woodlots provide a series of environmental benefits to the region's residents, including:
- Flood control
- Erosion Control
- Preservation of water quality
- Wildlife habitats
- Space for outdoor recreation
- Improved visual landscape
Not to mention the most obvious provision, clean air to breathe.
For more on woodlots and woodlot management, Small Farm Canada is hosting a webinar on Wednesday October 5th, at noon (EST), led by Ontario Woodlot Association Executive Director John Pineau.
