Splay leg or spraddle leg is a syndrome caused by weak, injured or poorly formed legs and results in legs pointed in an abnormal direction. This misalignment in chicks does not allow proper standing or walking.
Dr. Mike Petrik discusses the syndrome as a set of signs that can be caused by a variety of conditions. In this instance, splay-leg can be the result of poor incubation, vitamin deficiency or injuries caused by poor footing.
Dr. Mike also discusses potential solutions for rehabilitation and prevention in the summer issue of Small Farm Canada magazine.
