National Christmas Tree Day was Saturday December 5, 2020, and the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association (CCTGA) is predicting that this year will be a record-breaking year.
More than 28,315 hectares (69,968 acres) in Canada are dedicated to Christmas tree production. Most Christmas tree growers are small farm operators.
Families are looking for outdoor activities (allowing for physical distancing) and decorating for Christmas early this year to cheer up during the pandemic. This is leading farmers to expect 2020 to be a record sales year.
Indeed, many wholesale Christmas tree farms have reported record sales already this year and are predicting that they may be out of stock by the second weekend in December. Much of the Canadian wholesale production is exported to the US.
Many of the Christmas tree farmers who sell retail have creatively adapted their process flow for cut-your-own trees to allow for physical distancing, and many with “stores” have also adapted to allow consumers to experience cheerful and safe holiday activities.
