Melothria scabra or cucamelon, is a species of plant in the cucurbit family grown for its edible fruit. It is native to the geographic area that spans from Mexico to Venezuela. It is also commonly known as Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber, Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon, or pepquinos.
Cucamelons are versatile and can be eaten fresh or pickled. The taste is reminiscent of cucumber but slightly sweeter.
This year we tried growing cucamelon for the first time. The plants (started from seed indoors) really started to take off once they were planted out, late May. Fruit bearing started in late July and is continuing to flower and form fruit.
