Conestoga College in Ontario is bringing agricultural equipment into the teaching environment. A new course offered at Conestoga College’s Brantford Aviation Campus is teaching young men and women interested in agriculture about complex farming machinery with a focus on use, repair and communication in the field.
With a review of combines, tractors, tillage machines, and sprayers, graduates will have a full knowledge of the machines to prepare for work as a farm hand or as an entrepreneur on their own farms. The program was made in association with Brant County and the OFA to create trained operators with functional knowledge of how to use and repair complex machines.
Small growing farms can vary greatly in size, when farms reach 30-40 acres of land the need for machine expertise becomes more dire. Having well trained operators or training oneself can make the transition from small homestead to a more commercial farm far easier. With the new program from Conestoga, Ontario and Brant County farms will have a wider range of operators to choose from and an outlet for more farm education.
