Chicken is Canada’s biggest meat, farmers large and small are producing chicken and eating it too, Canada’s chicken farmers produced their annual research to examine how 2020 has impacted the industry. This year’s report featured statistics comparing the last 40 years of chicken production to find how the work done by farmers has changed over the years in Canada.
Since the 1980s Canada’s chicken farmers have cut their carbon footprint by 37% through processes like electric heating, improved lighting, and reduced feed inputs. The industry has also seen dramatic improvement in water consumption by reducing wasted water and optimizing the use of water within barns.
The final change in the chicken industry has come in the form of natural and renewable energy, with over 2 thirds of energy coming from renewable sources making the industry significantly greener and reducing the amount of intake with technological improvements.
The report also recognized the lengths taken by Canada’s governing bodies and farmers to maintain proper animal care and welfare. With family farms making up the majority of poultry in Canada, proper care for animals and respect for their lives has always been a focus for the industry, and this commitment has intensified over the last 20 years.
