Ottawa, Ontario - Due to a severe hay shortage in the Prairie provinces as a result of the catastrophic and extended drought, CFA has launched a “Hay West” initiative to transfer extra hay from farmers on the East Coast to those in need in the West. CFA is currently in the initial stages of facilitating a new Hay West program.
In the past, Canada's farmers have aided one another in similar ways. When Prairie farmers faced similar challenges in 2002, the first Hay West initiative was launched. Ten years later, the scenario was flipped, with Western farmers sending hay to drought-stricken fields in the East.
“We believe this initiative will help ease some of the stress that Western farmers are dealing with,” added Mary Robinson, CFA President.
As specifics on the Hay West project become available, CFA will offer updates, and will continue to work closely with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that farmers are supported, and extra hay reaches those in need.
