Canada is officially getting its own Food Day.
As reported in Small Farm Canada’s summer issue, Senator Black introduced the bill in the senate November 2021. The bill passed in the senate in May 2022.
Once it receives royal assent, the Saturday before the first Monday in August will be recognized as Food Day in Canada.
For this year it is Saturday August 5th, as the first Monday is August 7th.
“I would like to thank Parliamentarians, from both the Senate and the House, for their thoughtful reflections on the role of agriculture from coast to coast to coast,” Senator Black said. “I am delighted that Food Day (in) Canada was passed into law in time for its 20th anniversary.”
Establishing Food Day in Canada also pays tribute to the late Anita Stewart, a culinary author, food activist and the first Canadian Food Laureate at the University of Guelph.
John Nater, Member of Parliament for Perth-Wellington, and Bill sponsor in the House of Commons said, “It is with great satisfaction that we finally reach the end of debate before passing Bill S-227, Food Day in Canada.” said Nater. “This summer, 20 years after Anita Stewart organized the first Food Day in response to a national crisis that devastated our beef farmers, Food Day Canada will finally be officially recognized.”
