The government of British Columbia is stepping up to support its farmers by facilitating access to cutting-edge technologies that promise to enhance agricultural practices. This initiative aims to boost farm profitability, productivity, and food security throughout the province.
The B.C. On-Farm Technology Adoption Program, backed by both the Canadian and British Columbia governments, is making up to $2 million available this year for local farmers.
This funding is intended to help integrate commercially available technologies that streamline operations and increase the efficiency of food production—from growing and harvesting to packing and storing.
Eligible technologies include advanced machinery and robotics capable of operating autonomously and adapting to various agricultural environments.
These include devices like automated weeding equipment and harvesters, as well as systems designed for automated grading and sorting which require minimal human interaction.
Such innovations are pivotal in addressing labour shortages and enhancing the management of labour-intensive farming activities.
Applications for this lucrative opportunity are open from August 20th to October 6th, 2024, marking a critical period for farmers aiming to advance their technological capabilities.
This initiative is part of the broader Integrated Marketplace initiative delivered through Innovate BC, a Crown agency of the Province of B.C.
It draws from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership—a substantial five-year, $3.5 billion investment designed to fortify the competitiveness, innovation, and resilience of Canada’s agriculture sector.
During its first intake, the program successfully allocated $2 million to 54 farms, significantly aiding them in purchasing new equipment.
As the current round of funding unfolds, B.C. farmers are poised to further transform their agricultural practices, ensuring they remain competitive and sustainable in a rapidly evolving global market.
