As announced earlier this spring, the British Columbia government has significantly increased its support for farmers through an $80 million investment in the Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program. This funding is designed to enhance water management and storage, ensuring that agriculture remains sustainable amid climate challenges.
Premier David Eby emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the unprecedented low rainfall and snow levels which predict a challenging summer ahead. The new funds are aimed at increasing water efficiency and infrastructure to support crops and livestock and benefit stream flows and fish populations.
Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food, highlighted the dual threats of climate change on water and food security. The additional support will facilitate improvements in both on-farm and community water systems, crucial for managing potential floods and droughts.
Since its launch in June 2023 with an initial $20 million, the program has funded 108 projects. These range from agricultural dams and dugouts to enhanced water-supply systems, crucial for irrigation and livestock support. The expanded funding is expected to support hundreds more farmers across the province.
Success stories include Hope Farm Organics, where owner Andrew Adams credits the program with boosting their resilience against climate extremes, allowing for the expansion of crop production. Similarly, the City of Delta has utilized a $2 million grant to upgrade its irrigation systems, reinforcing water security for local farmers and the community.
In addition to infrastructure funding, the province is also allocating $3 million towards the Agricultural Drought Resource Extension Program. This initiative will offer regional workshops to educate farmers on best practices for water and irrigation use, particularly in drought-affected areas.
This strategic investment strengthens the agricultural sector's resilience against climate variability, ensuring the sustainability of food production in British Columbia.
