This year's Outstanding Young Farmers Memorial Scholarship winners, Aliera Chernoff of Strathmore, AB, and Danielle Nagazina of Calgary, AB, exemplify the future of Canadian agriculture.
Each has been awarded $1,000 to support their studies in agriculture, reflecting their dedication and the program's commitment to fostering new talent in the field.
Aliera Chernoff, pursuing her Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Agribusiness at Olds College, embraces the farming lifestyle. Her passion stems from a profound respect for agriculture's role in food security and community nourishment in Canada.
Through her studies and daily experiences, Aliera finds a deep sense of fulfillment in witnessing the fruits of her labor, from healthier livestock to successful crop yields.
Danielle Nagazina, on the other hand, is working towards her Horticulture Technology Diploma at the same institution. Having experienced food insecurity first-hand, Danielle is motivated to contribute constructively to her community by planning to open a greenhouse.
Her education in horticulture will equip her with the necessary skills to produce safe and healthy food, addressing food insecurity head-on and ensuring a reliable food source for those in need.
The scholarship aims to support students who have shown exceptional promise in agricultural pursuits, whether they have already begun their post-secondary education or are high school graduates stepping into the field.
The application process includes an essay that explores their passion for agriculture in Canada, underlining the importance of nurturing such enthusiasm.
As part of the broader Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers' program, which celebrates its 44th anniversary this year, the scholarship is a cornerstone in recognizing and promoting agricultural excellence among young professionals aged 18 to 39.
Supported by significant national entities like Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and John Deere, the program selects candidates from across seven Canadian regions, highlighting the diverse and dynamic nature of Canada’s agricultural sector.
