For Pride Month, Small Farm Canada is featuring a Canadian organization every week that celebrates community through food and agriculture.
Our third feature is Sweet Digz Farm, a veganic-regenerative small farm located on the edge of Steveston village, in Richmond, BC.
Sweet Digz Farm is owned and operated by Kareno Hawbolt and her partner, Kimi Hendess.
Leasing 4 acres of land since 2013, Sweet Digz grows organic vegetables, local organic seed and medicinal herbs.
The farm prioritizes soil health and fostering native habitat for pollinators, wild animals and a symbiotic relationship between all.
“We are passionate about organic agriculture, learning to be good earth stewards, mentoring beginner farmers while learning from “old-timers”, and contributing to a healthy and engaged community through the offering of delicious local food,” says Sweet Digz Farm.
Sweet Digz sells its produce through a 16-week Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, created to support the local farmer, and create connections between local farms and the people who buy their food.
CSA members “buy a share” in the farm and pay a lump sum in the Spring when the farmer’s income is low. This money goes towards seeds, soil amendments, irrigation, and other expenses.
With a CSA Member fee of $600, you can enjoy 16 weeks of 8-12 items per week delivered right to your home, bursting with flavour and nutrition.
Sweet Digz also manages the Share It Forward Fund, an initiative which provides fresh produce to local neighbors in need.
In 2021, customers and supporters donated $4,250 to share our veggies with neighbors in need!
Donations are appreciated by many recipients including CSA members, community meals kitchens, a local transition house, members of the Richmond Poverty Response Committee’s Richmond Advocacy Support Committee, the Richmond Food Bank, and Coming Together Richmond - a community-led food bank delivery service that formed in response to COVID.
