Did you know that many crops, including root crops and leafy greens, can be harvested from the garden fresh, even after the end of summer?
August is a fabulous month in the vegetable garden -- as summer crops are overwhelmingly productive (hopefully) and the crops sowed last month are growing beautifully. There are still plenty of seed options that are fast growing and will thrive in late August and September.
As nights start to get cooler, it’s time to look ahead and start sowing the vegetables that are quicker crops of autumn pickings and will provide valuable winter harvest.
And many more!
Keep in mind your climate, space, tastes and level of expertise when choosing which seeds to sow. It’s important to know the winter dates of your region to help determine when to direct sow, when to transplant, cover and how long to stretch the growing season before harvest.
Be sure to check ‘Regional Planting Charts’ from West Coast Seeds to see a vegetable planting chart of the most common average frost dates for your given area: https://www.westcoastseeds.com/pages/regional-planting-charts.
