The Irvine School in Irvine, AB, is providing a unique opportunity for students to learn about farming with the launch of their Agriculture Discovery Centre (ADC).
“Food is the fundamental connection to life,” says Nichole Neubauer, community partner on the ADC and the co-owner and operator of Neubauer Farms.
“We think it’s a top priority that everyone understands the origins of our food and how it’s produced.”
Neubauer Farms has long been dedicated to agricultural education, welcoming thousands of students to the farm over the years. But when the COVID-19 pandemic meant that they could no longer have students visit the farm, Neubauer began looking at other ways to provide that education.
“Could we create a micro farm environment right on the school playground where children could perform daily chores and looking after livestock, and also make direct curriculum connections to try and bring the learning to life?” says Neubauer of the impetus of the ADC.
Neubauer says that the opportunities provided by the center would be beneficial for students interested in any level of farming, particularly smaller scale and sustainable practices.
The ADC is providing educational experiences regarding irrigation systems, soil nutrition and health and composting, among other topics. She says they plan on incorporating topics such as vermicomposting in the future with an aim towards becoming a model of sustainability.
“Part of that sustainability model is always looking at everything in balance – in harmony – really, is what I tell the kids,” says Neubauer.
“When you make a decision, it needs to be environmentally sound, it needs to be socially responsible, and also financially viable.”
In the fall, the ADC will hold a harvest gala and invite the community for presentations and a small farmers market to sell some of the produce.
