We have been talking about saving seed for the last couple of Cool Tool weeks.
This week our cool tool is paper envelopes and their usage for storing seed.
Used, new or DIY, envelopes are handy to store seed after drying on filters and screens.
An advantage of paper envelopes is that they are air permeable. That is, they allow air to continue to circulate, reducing potential for mould in storage - especially for wet-seeded crops.
Paper envelopes can also be easily labeled, remembering it is easier to write on an empty flat envelope before seed filling.
If you are interested in upcycling paper to make envelopes, please check out How-to’s on YouTube to start crafting your own.
Remember too that there are many other tools available for seed saving such as blossom bags that help to preserve seed strains/varieties and dehydrators that can help in seed drying.
Stay tuned for more every #CoolToolThursday.
