I have quite a few tender veggies and herbs that are still producing well. I would like to keep them going until Thanksgiving (at least).
Some plants will then be transplanted to the greenhouse and some will be used fresh, dried or preserved in other ways once the cold weather arrives in earnest.
One of the tools I use to extend the vegetable and herb growing season, is a frost blanket.
The frost blanket pictured here can be easily placed over the garden area to insulate and provide cover from frost.
The blanket has gromets and can be secured with spikes (also provided with frost blanket).
The frost blanket should be off during the day to access sunshine and moisture and then back on at night if frost is in the forecast.
A frost blanket can also shield plants from light snow, heavy rain, wind and pests.
This blanket covers 200 square feet and is available at Canadian Tire. Lee Valley Tool also has options for frost protection like a poly plant tunnel.
Check with your local retailer for options they have to help extend the growing season in your area.
