I call this my duck-billed shovel, but in fact it is a tree planting shovel.
These shovels are available at some retailers, but I find retailers that deal in forestry equipment are sure to have tree planting shovels.
The tree planting shovel is quite sharp and it easily goes through soil, even if compacted. It also curves for digging a rounded hole and for carving around the root ball when transplanting trees.
This picture was taken at our farm a few weeks ago.
Although spruce trees have a more scattered root system at this size and the ground was a bit frozen, it was easy to transplant with the tree planting shovel.
