We all must manage waste of one kind or another. Dan Kerr gives some ideas on waste management that are all about being kinder and gentler to Mother Earth in our November-December issue. They are simple, basic ideas that we can all grab onto and make a difference, starting with being conscious about consumption. Can you use less or conserve resources and get the job done? More suggestions include repairs or second-hand options rather than buying new.
Dan also covers ideas on repurposing and recycling to divert waste from landfill.
This week’s cool tool is repurposing of another sort. We used sheet metal to build a chute to move gravel and soil and improve drainage on a steep slope. The metal came from the old driveshed on our farm. It fell due to unusual snow/rain combination a few years ago.
All the metal has been reclaimed and is being used in several projects on the farm including the chute pictured. Any remaining metal that is not fit for use or is spent will be taken to the metal recycler.
These actions serve to increase the lifecycle of the resource as well as landfill diversion – a win-win!
